FOOTBALL PRO REBORN

Development Update #1 — Version 1.0 Complete!

Bringing a Classic Football Simulation Back to Life

Project Status: Version 1.0 — Successful Private Testing Release

We're excited to share the progress we've made on Football Pro Reborn, an independent passion project dedicated to reviving the legendary Front Page Sports Football Pro '98 and laying the groundwork for a modern PC football simulation.

Our long-term vision is to combine the depth and strategy of classic football simulations with modern graphics, updated gameplay features, current football environments, and modern PC compatibility.

We're starting with the original Football Pro '98 engine as our research and development foundation.

After considerable experimentation, reverse engineering, compatibility testing, and custom programming, we've reached our first major milestone.

Football Pro Reborn 1.0 is now running successfully on two separate Windows 11 computers!

Development Milestones — Version 1.0

1. Windows 11 Compatibility

One of our first challenges was getting the original 1998 game running reliably on modern hardware.

We initially experimented with Windows 98 virtualization but encountered several problems involving graphics drivers, DirectDraw, and game stability.

Eventually, we established a working native Windows 11 environment for Football Pro '98 version 1.08.

Our compatibility work included:

  • Resolving graphics initialization problems.

  • Identifying conflicts with the NVIDIA in-game overlay.

  • Investigating legacy DirectDraw behavior.

  • Discovering and working around installation-path-related crashes.

  • Establishing reliable short-path game installations.

  • Preserving the original game executables and simulation components.

2. League Creation, Saving, and Loading

One of our biggest breakthroughs was resolving crashes associated with saving leagues.

After investigating the problem, we traced the failures to issues involving legacy installation paths.

With the corrected installation structure, we successfully tested league creation, saving, exiting, restarting, and reloading.

We also verified season simulation and championship progression during our baseline testing.

3. Full Football Gameplay

We successfully launched and completed CPU-versus-CPU football games using the original simulation.

Testing included:

  • Complete football games.

  • Scoring and statistical tracking.

  • Player movement and animation.

  • Postgame results.

  • League saving and reloading.

  • Continued game operation after restarting.

One of our widescreen development tests featured New England defeating Indianapolis 10–8, with the score and statistics successfully preserved after restarting and reloading.

Most importantly, we're retaining the original simulation rather than replacing it with a completely different football engine at this stage.

4. HD Graphics Compatibility

The original game was designed around 640×480 graphics.

We integrated cnc-ddraw 7.1 as a compatibility and scaling solution, allowing the game to operate in a modern 1920×1080 window.

The enhancements include:

  • 1920×1080 windowed presentation.

  • Original 4:3 aspect-ratio mode.

  • Full-width 16:9 stretched display mode.

  • Improved image scaling and filtering.

  • Custom graphics shaders.

  • Corrected mouse alignment under scaling.

  • Configurable graphics settings.

The current graphics system enhances the original picture. It does not yet provide native 1080p player models, fields, or interface artwork.

5. Custom HD Graphics Manager

We developed our own application, the Football Pro Reborn HD Graphics Manager, reaching version 0.2 during the 1.0 development cycle.

This application provides a foundation for managing graphics compatibility, enhancements, and display settings.

Available configurations include enhanced graphics, widescreen presentation, original 4:3 display, and classic compatibility fallbacks.

The Graphics Manager is intended to evolve alongside the project.

6. Windows 11 Installer

We created a Windows installation package using Inno Setup.

The installation system brings together the original-game compatibility configuration, our graphics enhancements, application components, and supporting documentation.

We have now installed and tested Football Pro Reborn 1.0 on two different Windows 11 computers, with successful results.

The original game CD currently needs to remain mounted for gameplay. This is a documented limitation of our present private testing release.

Version 1.0 remains a private development build and is not available as a public game download.

What's Next? Football Pro Reborn 2.0

HD Graphics Restoration

Our next major development phase is underway.

Rather than simply enlarging the original 640×480 graphics, we're investigating how to extract, restore, and enhance the game's actual graphical assets.

This includes:

  • Player graphics and animations.

  • Helmets and uniforms.

  • Football fields and end zones.

  • Stadiums and backgrounds.

  • Team logos and other artwork.

  • Menus, fonts, and scoreboards.

  • Gameplay presentation and visual effects.

We've already developed initial asset-extraction tools and recovered our first batches of graphical resources and animation frames.

Some of the original proprietary graphics formats still need to be decoded.

The eventual objective is to replace or enhance the original artwork with genuinely higher-resolution graphics, while preserving the underlying football simulation.

Looking Ahead — Football Pro Reborn 3.0

Modern Controllers and Gameplay Enhancements

Our tentative third development phase will focus on modernizing the actual on-field playing experience.

Planned areas of investigation include:

  • Xbox controller compatibility.

  • Microsoft SideWinder and other legacy controller support.

  • Customizable controller mappings.

  • Improved player controls.

  • Modern gameplay configuration options.

  • Enhanced camera and presentation settings.

  • Local multiplayer improvements where technically practical.

We want to modernize the experience without sacrificing the strategic depth that made the original Football Pro series special.

Our Long-Term Vision

Our ultimate ambition is bigger than simply getting an old football game running again.

We want to use what we learn through Football Pro Reborn to help create a modern football simulation with:

  • Deep franchise and league management.

  • Detailed football statistics.

  • Realistic football strategy and AI.

  • Modern high-definition or 3D gameplay.

  • Extensive customization and modding capabilities.

  • Modern controller support.

  • Strong single-player and CPU-versus-CPU simulation.

  • A focus on football realism rather than arcade-style gameplay.

We believe the classic Football Pro series offers valuable lessons in designing a deep, engaging football simulation.

The long-term project may require developing independent technology and obtaining appropriate rights or creating original assets rather than distributing proprietary game components.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO HELP!

We're interested in connecting with people who have experience in:

  • C/C++ and C# programming

  • Reverse engineering and legacy Windows game development

  • DirectDraw, DirectX, OpenGL, and modern rendering systems

  • 2D/3D graphics, animation, and asset restoration

  • Sports simulation engines and football AI

  • Controller integration and gameplay programming

  • Game interface and menu design

  • Testing, debugging, and compatibility engineering

We're also interested in hearing from fans of the original Front Page Sports Football Pro games who remember what made them special.

This is currently an independent, non-commercial passion project in active development. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the original game's publisher or any football league.

We're not asking for financial contributions. Right now, we're looking for interested people, technical knowledge, creative ideas, and potential collaborators.

If you're a developer, graphics artist, football simulation enthusiast, or longtime Football Pro fan who would like to help bring this vision to life, we'd love to hear from you.

Football Pro Reborn

Preserving the simulation. Rebuilding the experience.
